Anja Kirschner und David Panos - n.b.k. - Berlin

through January 27th 2013

Their video Ultimate Substance (2012, 34 min), presented for the first time in Germany, will be staged in a setting of sculptural elements. The film departs from the hypothesis that the advent of coinage, which first emerged in ancient Greece, led to the fundamental division between sensual and abstract forms of experience. The metaphysical outlook of Greek philosophy and mathematics can be seen as corresponding to the abstract experience of monetary exchange.

Steven Claydon - Rat. Pearl. Onion. London - Sadie Coles - London

through January 26th 2013

Steven Claydon’s first exhibition with Sadie Coles HQ revolves around the transmission of matter and information, and the mediating effect of hindsight. Harnessing sculpture, painting and video, Claydon reinterprets the vehicles – objects, images, texts –via which cultural baggage has been communicated. He explores how an object’s social status or agency is offset by its essential materiality or “thingly” agency.

Ryan McLaughlin . Barbara - Lüttgenmeijer - Berlin

through December 22nd 2012

The first view surprises: everything appears painterly but also as if in a comic. The subjects are succinct and simultaneously immovable in their composition. Sincerity can be detected, but still there are scenes full of wit and irony. From where does this feeling of enclosure come – from this loose brushstroke?

Pieter Schoolwerth - After Troy - Miguel Abreu - NYC

through December 22nd 2012

In this new series of works, Schoolwerth furthers his exploration of the effects of abstraction on the task of representingthe human body through painting. Grounded in an initial act of tracing the contours of a digital printout of SimonVouet’s Aeneas and His Family Fleeing Troy from1635, he develops his complex compositions by combining drawn, printed, and painted pictorial elements that generally compress the four figure scene at hand into what might bedescribed as a pulverized, single new figure in formation.

Alain Séchas last showed his work at Galerie Chantal Crousel in 2009, startling us with a set of acrylics on papier marouflé (paper mounted on canvas), interlacing colors, curves, and splatters. The titles he gave to the paintings compelled the viewer to seek out analogies, thereby establishing a dialogue between the viewer and the piece.

“A great shift culminated in the era of Bach. Before the Baroque, perception was sequence-dominated (i.e. contrapuntal lines), and afterward, perception focused on simultaneity (chords). We can and do commonly perceive both of these dimensions at once, but not always with equal focus. In addition, the dimension of orchestration has been awesomely expanded from Bach's time to our own. To meaningfully ingest all of these perspectives, we may switch between these sonic views as though rotating a cube to see it from each side in turn, focusing attention on lines here, harmonic progressions there, and large scale transitions of amplitude or timbre at other times. We flit between multiple perceptual modes, but our minds will also tend to merge and group the sounds, perceiving a totality on some single central inner hearing ear. This Cyclopean (Julesz 1971) ear is the central single "ear" in which we hear with the most profound feeling.
