How Far Away is Mars - group show - T293 - Rome

through September 7th 2013

Sunah Choi, David Douard, Daniel Keller, Andrea Magnani, Mel Nguyen, Anicka Yi

Each work is a construction of overlapping layers to simulate dense beings made to recreate their factual existence and to escape materiality. A poetic revolt that lies in nonsenses, manifestations of exuberance and primitive impulses. Pointing to something far away from us the works remind us how important is freedom, metaphysical infinity, idealism and emotions. The show wants to be a meditation on ‘the ordinary’ and intends to put together works that exhibit the characteristics of extended or altered prototypes infused with a fair amount of desuetude and unfamiliarity.

Nick Van Woert - Haruspex - Yvon Lambert - Paris

through July 30th 2013

For this exhibition, Nick van Woert will present new works inspired by the theme of haruspicy, an Etruscan and Roman religious practice which consisted of interpreting omens or divining the future by inspecting the entrails of sacrificial animals. Like a haruspex, the artist has chosen to reveal and examine certain aspects of our society, just as the entrails of animals were considered to be the reflection of the economic and geographical situation of the milieu in which they were reared.

Jutta Koether - The Double Session - Campoli Presti - London

through July 26th 2013

Koether has already explored Derrida’s idea of doubling within the artist’s Marriage Paintings - presented this year at Dundee Contemporary Arts and currently on show at Arnolfini, Bristol. By reproducing the subject again the artist relates it to the philosopher’s comments on Mallarmé’s mime, where the supplement constitutes the original and denies the difference between a first and a secondary truth.

Steven Claydon - Total Social Objects - David Kordansky - LA

through June 22nd 2013

Steven Claydon dramatizes and interrogates the ways in which objects have been described, venerated, understood and misunderstood throughout the course of civilization. This process involves a wide range of social, historical, economic, and literary factors, and is intended to differentiate an object's social or anthropocentric 'agency' from its innate, 'thingly' materiality. In Claydon's sculptures, objects are not seen as the antitheses of living things, but as entities that differ from the living by a difference of a degree, possessed of their own 'animism' and with their own capacity for will, hubris, and desire.

through July 20th 2013

In the heyday of discovery, a team of German archaeologists found, in an ancient temple, 107 young women wrapped in white linen. They lay in two long rows, their bodies tightly entwined. A girl with a gold ribbon in her hair lay at the head of one row, a girl with a silver ribbon at the head of the other. To this day, the significance of the ribbons remains a mystery. Why were only two ribbons found? What ritual, long forgotten, had taken place here? Were they favored by gods or by men? Was gold dearer than silver. Or, forever obscured by the secret hierarchy of lost religions, were the maidens adorned merely because they lay at the head of their long lines of lovers?

Florian Auer - BABIES ARE BORN AT NIGHT - Cell Projects - London

through July 14th 2013

‘BABIES ARE BORN AT NIGHT’ continues Auer’s fascination for post- industrial aesthetics, which stem from the late eighties and the changing environment of corporate culture. Using material and objects closely associated with consumer desire, aspiration and lifestyle Auer’s practice oscillates between the computer screen, and the materiality of hand crafted matter to drive his methods. Choosing the paraphernalia of the trading floors and urban loft living, which have become iconized by the global markets, Auer reshapes a new scenario to present the ‘bursting bubble’ that continuously drives these forces.

GREGOR HILDEBRANDT - Orphische Schatten - Almine Rech - Brussels

through July 27th 2013

Gregor Hildebrandt was inspired for this exhibition by a painting by René Daniëls: “I saw this work only once, when I was an adolescent, through a glass door at Documenta 92”. The picture shows a space in which several paintings appear in white against a dark background. Gregor Hildebrandt sees this project as a tribute to Daniëls. He reinterprets the painting by preserving its dimensions and replacing its bluish-black colour with tape from audio cassettes. These cassettes feature recordings of the Jacques Brel song “La quête” (The quest), taken from the musical comedy Man of La Mancha. “I chose this song because for me Daniëls’ painting evokes traumatic associations: the candle-like painting shines like the star in Brel’s song”.
