A theatre of trophylike humanoids wrapped in shimmering lycra pouches weep in unison. A bunch ofsad sacks. Their audience is comprised of wobbly fingertips which rise like zombies from beneath acomputer keyboard graveyard. The epitaphs are beyond concise. One reads “S”, another, “3”, still athird, “shift”.

Freek Wambacq - Un Air Banane - Galerie Van der Mieden - Brussels

through April 21st 2013

From a smile to a penis, ‘un air banane’ may refer to joy, to everything that has to do with sex, to a sort of inertia, goodwill without effort, and even incomprehension. When we look at the colors of a banana, with the European Commission norms for cutting boards in mind, things become quite confusing: yellow is chicken and white is cheese. However, the use of polyethylene does increase safety and avoids cross-contamination.

Larry Bamburg - BurlsHoovesandShells - Simone Subal - NYC

through April 28th 2013

Larry Bamburg’s latest body of work examines the arbitrariness of existence through a broad understanding of sculptural form and a nuanced reflection on artistic process.  Bamburg sees the world as a collection of formal systems on the verge of failure, and his work is unified by several interconnected questions: what happens when chance is allowed to run its course; what is the relationship between artistic intention and the internal logic of each object; and what are the limits and possibilities of each material?

Jochen Lempert - Cherry Blossoms, Rain Drops, Midges and a White Leaf - Lulu - DF

through May 12th 2013

Lulu is proud to inaugurate its program with an exhibition of the German, Hamburg-based photographer Jochen Lempert. For his first exhibition in Latin America, the artist will present a selection of photos that focus on some of the core concerns of his practice, such as anthropocentrism, natural phenomena, nature and photography. Consisting of a single photogram of cherry blossoms, a grid of rain drops collecting on cement, a triptych of a sparse cloud of sunlit midges in a park, and a white leaf, the photos engage questions of human order, chance, and seriality as perceived through the medium of analogue photography. For all their will to reflect the imposition of order onto natural phenomena, the photos are nevertheless characterized by Lempert’s rigorous polyvalence. As such, they are as formally reminiscent of all-over abstractions as they are evocative of starry constellations, resembling, at times, drawings, and at others, collages, despite the fact that he shoots exclusively in 35mm, black-and-white, and never digitally manipulates his photos.

CLUB PAINT - Woman with a Rock - Paradise Garage - LA

through May 9th 2013

The world of Woman With Rock is neither staid nor flat. The pieces are capable of containing extraordinarily contrary affects side by side. From the tender and pervy Gee your hair smells terrific, where a smiling blue dog delights in the butt of a green man, to the unforgettable A clam smoking a cigarette (you’ll never look at a clam the same way again), the figures represented in these pieces are alive, complex, and weird.
