Sigurdardóttir’s predominantly sculptural practice focuses on the adapted representation, modification and containment of time, space and place - a practice whose greater intention is to eschew a conventional approach by the viewer. With architecture and landscape as sources, the artist’s sculptures use scale and distortion to focus attention on the space and perception between the viewer and the object. Using the vernaculars of architecture and topography, Sigurdardóttir creates objects with a prismatic spirit that fractures a viewer’s perspective.

Luc Tuymans - Allo! - David Zwirner - London

The present exhibition comprises a series of paintings entitled Allo! While an initial source of inspiration was Joseph Conrad’sHeart of Darkness (1899), the visual reference for the works was the final scene in the 1942 film The Moon and Sixpence, whichitself is an adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s eponymous novel from 1919. The plot is loosely based upon the life of PaulGauguin and revolves around a stockbroker who leaves his job and family to become an artist, eventually settling in Tahiti. Following his death several years later, his doctor travels to the primitive studio he left behind and discovers his paintings—swirly, colorful landscapes and nudes—moments before the late artist’s Tahitian widow sets fire to everything

White Cube is pleased to present its first exhibition with Theaster Gates. Gates is an artist, curator and urban activist whose work aims to galvanise communities and act as a catalyst for social change. For this exhibition, Gates has created a multi-faceted installation that investigates themes of race and history through sculpture, installation, performance and two-dimensional works exhibited both inside and outside of the Bermondsey site. The exhibition furthers the artist's interest in a critique of social practice, shared economies and the question of objects in relation to political and cultural thought.

Uwe Henneken - Rotation und Abrieb - Capitain Petzel - Berlin

The 19th century classic is a comparative study on myth, religion, superstition, and ritual sacrifice from the primitives to Christian theology. Amidst its many fables and lore both high and low cultures shared a dependency on the cycle of seasons and corn was the main sustenance for life. Corn was deemed to have a spirit represented in the last sheaf that was distinguished as the “Corn King” or “Corn Mother”; it’s cutting was done through ritual sacrifice. The whole ceremony concludes with this specially selected “old” seed mixed into the new grains in order to enable the next crop to grow and thrive.

Of course this seemed very appealing, a wider field for play, more established practices, some nicer lighting. What we didn't consider was the way in which this different environment complicates what we're doing. We realized it's stranger to willfully misunderstand and misuse artwork from people we don't know so well socially. Our actions tend to be a bit superficial - dealing with material surfaces or simply picking up a newspaper lying nearby. But for us this didn't really matter as we weren't interested in critique anyway, but rather to co-opt in the same way that capitalism absorbs its critics by rearranging form and content.
