Rue Riboutté or Rue de Châteaudun (both 2008) also show the melting of different image levels: inside of the windows the white paint has been scratched away and written-on (by a third party, because these are objets trouvé). Mirror-inverted letters allude to narrations that are never led to an understandable end. Facades of houses across the street are reflected: what is outside suddenly is part of the image. The viewer is confronted with something odd and the size of the photographs that is approximately the size of the shop windows adds to the vigor of the works.

Robert Therrien - Sprüth Magers - Berlin

The artist began experimenting with scale in the 1990's and the smaller and more private referents of the 1970's and 1980's had given way to drastically magnified subjects destined for the public domain. It is likely that this transition was fuelled by the artist’s use of the Polaroid camera to photograph setups in his studio, blurring the conventions of framing and spatial depth and thus inspiring Therrien to re-imagine the scale of his works. Furthermore, photography provided the opportunity to explore the multiple viewpoints of the sculptures in situ within an enclosed environment in order to find the ‘perfect perspective’.

Isaac Julien - Ten Thousand Waves - Brandhorst Museum - Munich

The Udo and Anette Brandhorst Stiftung has contributed to the financing of a new work by Isaac Julien, which was completed in 2010 and is presented in Germany for the first time since 30th March 2011 in the Museum Brandhorst.
Ten Thousand Waves is a 9-channel video installation which the artist worked on for almost four years. The main scenes were filmed in China under participation of several internationally-celebrated actresses, including the legendary Maggie Cheung and Zhao Tao. The video artist Yang Fudong, as well as the poet Wang Ping and calligraphy grandmaster Gong Fagen also stood before the camera.
