Berthold Reiß - SVPERFLAX - Galerie Christine Mayer - Munich

through January 11th 2014

To look at works of art from an economic perspective not least includes abstracting from the life they emerged from. According to Werner Hofmann John Flaxman meets this relationship with economy on eye level: “Formal economy depends on the artistic means of abstraction.” In this series of oil paintings presented by Galerie Christine Mayer Berthold Reiß traces this line, not leading from life to death but from death to life.

Tobias Spichtig - 11 Rivington - NYC

through January 5th 2014

The artist’s practice is fuelled by its continuous circulation of media, formats, and materials. The constant within his work is an aesthetic claim upon form.  His conscious awareness of the generation of images goes back to the aesthetic understanding that characterizes today’s visual culture: the overlaying of information, and its simultaneous, multiple representations.  Spichtig’s concept thereby becomes a concentrated potentiality that induces, in its precision, new avenues of thought and jokes. And that is exactly what happens in the exhibition, the city, the jungle, and indeed in our thinking: something like reality is generated by chance.

Josephine Meckseper - Andrea Rosen - NYC

through January 18, 2014

Meckseper’s new work attempts to construct the present as archaeology and to create a window into a historic past at the same time. The exhibition will feature large-scale vitrines, mirror wall panels and photographic works that reveal a historical link between contemporary consumer display forms and their early 20th century precursors. While Meckseper’s earlier vitrine works commented on contemporary consumer culture using the shop window as an example and focus point for civic unrest and protest in our late capitalist society, her current works allude to the political dimension of early modernist display architecture and design between World War I and II in Weimar Germany.

Tony Oursler - Glare Schematics - Albert Baronian - Brussels

through January 11th 2014

Encompassing the notion of identity analysis made physical in poetic multimedia schematics, these works explore the idea of making visible private psychoanalytical and genealogical maps embodied in icons of one’s past and present. Oursler suggests an interlocking chain of influences as mnemonic images ranging from body parts, masks, stock mythological characters, serpents, demons, family portraits, abstract lights and celestial bodies are all connected via metallic vectors which define the associative links. Oursler asks, “who are we at any given moment, and how did we become what we are?”
