Karl Norin - Think for Me, Please - Gallery Niklas Belenius - Stockholm

through November 3rd 2013

The show consist of a number of everyday objects such as worn down sheets, cheap rugs and colourful fake furs compressed and polished into a sleek surface and mounted onto wooden frames.  Unlike many contemporary painters Norin is unbothered with tradition. He is occupied with how the objects fade in and out of abstraction and how his low-tech process of casting paintings enables random compositions in eternity.  In contrast to the historical legacy of abstract painting Norin uses abstraction as a tool to evoke associations and to disclose new meanings and hidden patterns.

Why Painting Now?: group show - Emanuel Layr - Wien

through November 24th 2013

with Gerard Byrne, Morag Keil, Fiona Mackay, Tobias Madison, Manuela Gernedel, Marlie Mul, Anna Oppermann, Emanuel Rossetti, Christopher Williams

curated by Bart van der Heide

At first sight it may seem far-fetched to link the traditional still life with institutional critique. As a genre perhaps furthest away from the dissemination of critical positions, the still life has generally remained beyond the reach of conceptual discourse. However, one could argue that the absence of narrative in the still life, as well as its fascination with objects otherwise overlooked aesthetically, draws attention to the conditions, execution, and hierarchies involved in visual art production.Hence, the still life could be seen as a premodern phenomenon where artistic production becomes self-reflexive. The trompe l’oeil of Cornelis Gijsbrechts from 1670 exemplifies this self-conscious turn almost in extremis by depicting the reverse side of a painting and, as such, turning the frame, stretcher, and unpainted canvas into its main subject.

Tacita Dean: JG - Frith Street Gallery - London

through October 26th 2013

JG is a sequel in technique to FILM, Tacita Dean’s 2011 project for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. It is inspired by her correspondence with British author J.G. Ballard (1930-2009) regarding connections between his short story “The Voices of Time” (1960) and Robert Smithson’s iconic earthwork and film Spiral Jetty (both works, 1970). The new 26 ½ minute work is a 35mm anamorphic film shot on location in the saline landscapes of Utah and California using Dean’s recently developed and patented system of aperture gate masking.

Elad Lassry - 303 - NYC

through October 26th 2013

Over the last several years, Lassry has distinguished himself as an outstanding thinker and experimenter within the expanded field of contemporary art. Mining the relationship between traditional modes of analogue production and digital intervention within an unprecedented "blitz" of image proliferation, Lassry has creatively reassessed what it means to make pictures in the post-photographic age. His image-driven, interdisciplinary practice - including photographs, films, sculptures, performances and site-interventions is positioned within an art historical genealogy that taps the readymade, post-appropriative practices, structuralist filmmaking and relational modes of exhibition display.
