Jesse Greenberg - Derek Eller Gallery - NYC

through February 8th 2014

The biological forms evoked by Greenberg’s wall works and small sculptures are as familiar as they are discomforting. Composed of urethane resin and colored pigment, the works contain percolating bubbles and a flowing alchemy, a painterly quality complimented by a palette that is alternately seductive and repulsive. Greenberg says, “I’m witness to these bizarre fluid moments, and though I’m making sculpture, my medium is liquids, and the membranes that contain them.”  His work reflects back to the post-minimalism of Eva Hesse and Lynda Benglis and forward to the post-human future conjured by David Croenenberg and a new generation of visual artists.

Albert Mertz - Watch Red-Blue T.V. - TIF SIGFRIDS - LA

through March 1st 2014

Albert was a Danish artist who lived from 1920 until 1990 and spent the last twenty-two years of his life working with what he called The Red-Blue Proposition. Every day he painted things red and blue. Paper, cardboard, canvases, and the chair he sat on, the wrapping of cigarette packages he smoked, the envelopes of letters he received. Half red. Half blue. Once you know Albert, you’ll begin to notice what a popular color combination this is. For several years now, we’ve been thinking of Albert Mertz and nearly everywhere we go, something reminds us of him.

Diane Simpson - JTT - NYC

through January 12th, 2014

Chicago based artist Diane Simpson creates work that evolves from a diverse range of clothing and architectural sources. She begins her practice by making an isometric drawing of a three-dimensional object, such as an apron or a catcher’s bib, and focuses on abstracting the object in part by incorporating an apparatus for the object: a stand or other means of hanging the object in space. Using this drawing as a schematic, she then re-constructs a three-dimensional object from the two-dimensional rendering. In a 2010 essay, curator Lynne Warren accurately refers to Simpson as a “shape-sifter”.
