Hephaestus is the Greek god of fire, metalworking, stonemasonry and the art of sculpture. He is usually depicted as a bearded man holding hammer and tongs, the tools of a smith and riding a donkey. He is also the patron of trades related to ovens. Thrown off mount Olympus he was crippled for life - what he lacks in lower body mobility, he makes up for with his inventiveness and superior craftsmanship.

ALEEN SOLARI: äh that we could be so close - Diane Kruse - Hamburg

through March 1st 2014

The installation-based works by Aleen Solari mostly integrate people that do something, for example feeding a kitten, drinking beer or eating potato crisps, or let alone. Activities or inactivities that remind you on attitudes of Slackers, the Beat Generation or Punk and the corresponding clichées. Certainly in this context the question if those cool and apparently bored actors are able to be identified with our conventional everyday life and charged with our own stories here and there comes up. It is nebulous and up to ourselves if the performers contemplate, wait or watch us but as components of installations they definetely encourage us to reflect and irritate us more than a sculpture or a painting are able to precisely because they are humans, the alleged creation´s crowning glory.

MARK ROEDER - Michael Benevento - LA

through March 8th 2014

Initially made from personal photographs produced for the purpose of painting and then later using sourced imagery, Mark Roeder’s ongoing collection of black and white Antipaintings mine the unique and complicated relationship between photography and subjectivity. They examine how photography’s ability to represent actual events is complicated when personal significance or idiosyncrasy become rationalized by the proliferation of so-called user-generated content on the Internet, particularly through online image bookmarking collections (visual ‘surf’ blogs).

Tammy Rae Carland: Live From Somewhere - Jessica Silverman Gallery - San Francisco

through May 1st 2014

The central thesis of the exhibition is contained in a single-channel video titled Live from Somewhere, inspired by the opening sequence of the late Gilda Radner’s 1979 one-woman stage show. In the film, a hand-controlled spotlight enters and exits a theatrical proscenium, searching for the center of attention, who never arrives. The light paces, scans, struts and frets – itself becoming an abstract actor upon the stage. An expression of performance anxiety, the video suggests the stage fright of the reluctant entertainer as well as the collective unease of the expectant audience. A meditation on the act of searching, the video harks back to the theater of the absurd (particularlyWaiting for Godot) and looks askance at the incongruity of being “stood up” by a “stand up.”
