A DOUBLE-VENUE EXHIBITION

Berlin-based artist David Barbarino (b. 1980 in Frankfurt) returns to London for a survey of selected works from recent years after having completed his fine art degree at Central St. Martins in 2005. The artist has since been included in various museum group shows, such as The Real Thing curated by VVork at MU Eindhoven and Utopia Station curated by Molly Nesbit, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Rirkrit Tiravanija at Haus der Kunst, Munich. The exhibition MAGNIFICENT BUTCHER will be his first solo show in the UK. This double venue exhibition will give the opportunity to view the artists work in two of the most exciting art spaces Peckham has to offer.

A shuttle service between venues will be provided on the night of the private view, if you are visiting in the daytime, it is a 15min walk between the two venues.

Yanai Toister - Keepers of the Light - Dvir Gallery - Tel Aviv

through January 29th, 2011 For several years the artist and curator, Yanai Toister, has been investigating a diverse variety of photographic practices. At this, his first solo exhibition at the Dvir Gallery, Toister will unveil a fresh piece of work specifically designed for Dvir’s Nahum Street gallery. This latest presents twenty-one large-format photographs that were executed without the use of a camera. Toister's work papers the interior of the gallery with the façade of Tel Aviv's Dan Hotel (Yaakov Agam, 1970).

‘The similarity of the pictorial structures to veils, plants or starry heavens, prompts the imagination like in science fiction – to a greater extent than a real veil or leaf would do. These are random resemblances. Yet, the basic impression of nature’s complexity is here equally in consequence of the molecular self-organization of matter. The basis for self-organizing processes in the natural world are physical and chemical laws, like the relatively weak intermolecular forces. Van der Waals forces, for instance, provide the right polarity of the electrically charged atoms and molecules. Cohesive and adhesive power of the liquids make the pathways, and pigment particles deposit or get dragged along like pebbles and sand in a riverbed.’ (Ulrike Heise).

Galerie Guido W. Baudach is pleased to present Die Theorie des Himmels III – Focus Imaginarius (The Theory of Heavens – Focus Imaginarius) the fourth solo exhibition by Berlin based artist Björn Dahlem (*1974). For more than ten years now, Dahlem is intensly concerned with the creation of world models and galactic visions. Apart from a series of extensive installations, also smaller sculptures and assemblages in display cases were built. With these, even in this show, Dahlem condenses his views of a symbolically loaden „mechanic of the heavens“.

Adrian Ghenie - S.M.A.K. - Ghent

Ghenie’s dense and tactile paintings with their complex structure offer a contemporary vision of major political narratives and such fundamental, universal topics as the abuse of power, exploitation and oppression, and also of a personal, individual human struggle. His critique is never direct, however, but always takes a roundabout route. Ghenie obscures all his historical and political references by fusing them with personal memories, film references, clichés from the entertainment industry and elements from art history. This gives rise to a continuous metamorphosis between fact and construction, a grid of fragmented stories on collective and individual catastrophes. Ghenie depicts a journey through the darkest realms of human existence, where a glimmer of hope nevertheless persists.

Paul Thek - Diver, A Retrospective - Whitney Museum - NYC

Paul Thek: Diver, a Retrospective is the first retrospective in the United States devoted to the legendary American artist Paul Thek (1933-1988). A sculptor, painter, and one of the first artists to create environments or installations, Thek came to recognition showing his sculpture in New York galleries in the 1960s. The first works exhibited, which he began making in 1964 and called “meat pieces” as they were meant to resemble flesh, were encased in Plexiglas boxes that recall Minimal sculptures. At the end of the sixties, Thek left for Europe, where he created extraordinary environments, incorporating elements from art, literature, theater, and religion, often employing fragile and ephemeral substances, including wax and latex.

Michael Sailstorfer - forst - Kestnergesellschaft - Hannover

Michael Sailstorfer (*1979, Velden/Vils), who studied at the Akademie der Künste in Munich and Goldsmiths College in London, is one of the most important representatives of recent German art. Through the artistic transformation of everyday objects and places he creates poetic images that deal with conditions from euphoria to decay. Absurd failure and tragicomedy play as important a role as the question of the space a sculpture is able to occupy: sometimes he even attacks our senses of hearing and smell. Sailstorfer's work operates within the tension between such concepts as home and the far away, mobility and standstill or light and darkness. Destruction and recombination are his basic compositional principles. Despite the vehemence of his artistic transformations, Sailstorfer's works always have a characteristic humor and background melancholy.

Julien Bismuth - The Golden Ass - The Box - Los Angeles

Julien Bismuth's second exhibition at The Box consists of three distinct new works. The first is a video, The Golden Ass, shot by the artist at the Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue in Tehachapi, California and at the Wild Burro Rescue in Olancha, California, both sanctuaries for the increasingly endangered feral donkey population. Rather than a documentation of these animals or their situation, the video is a sequence of discrete encounters with the animals and their caretakers, each shot the consequence of a simple gesture of placement of the camera
