The works in the show explore the unifying aesthetic and interest in unconventional materials and sculptural practices shared by these three geographically and methodologically disparate artists. The exhibition will be the first time that these artists have shown work with Lisson Gallery.

Private view: 24 February 2011, 6-9pm Hales Gallery is pleased to present TOLD, a group exhibition that presents three artists who reconsider the role of narrative in contemporary painting. Each artist contemplates the nature of narrative and how it could be used and reinvented for a new era. Much of the work alludes to past structures of this genre but resists the smooth passage of the content. In its place, each artist has created their own form of anti-narrative through the use of biographical, subjective and personalised imagery. Disrupting and fragmenting the notion of a singular reading, the artists encourage the viewer to imagine.

Karthik Pandian - Unearth - Whitney Museum of American Art - NYC

Los Angeles-based artist Karthik Pandian uses 16mm film and architectural constructions to examine the relationship between ancient and modern cultures and the ways in which contemporary societies understand and treat the monuments of societies past. Unearth grows out of Pandian’s two-year investigation into the ancient Native American city of Cahokia, the remnants of which are located outside and underneath the site of present day East St. Louis, IL.

Thomas Hirschhorn - Wirtschaftslandschaft Davos - Aargauer Kunsthaus - Aargau

In 2010 the Aargauer Kunsthaus in Aargau was able to acquire the Installation Wirtschaftslandschaft Davos by Thomas Hirschhorn with funds provided by the Aargauischer Kunstverein and additional support from the Federal Cultural Office. Both artistically and in terms of content the acquisition is a perfect addition to this museum of Swiss art.

Freedom of Speech - groupshow - Kunstverein Hamburg

The exhibition "Freedom of Speech" questions and analyses the concept of freedom of speech and the ideological role it plays in Western democracy. Everything revolves around the question: What if only those who say the truth are allowed to speak? What consequences does the freedom of expression have for our society? How and where is this freedom instrumentalized? Justified questions, that would also have been apt in connection with the debate about Thilo Sarrazin's book and his racist comments in the media. However, this controversy also manifested itself in the cartoon dispute in 2005, when a right-wing Danish daily newspaper published the so-called "Muhammad cartoons." The ensuing conflict and the Iranian reaction in the form of a "Holocaust cartoon competition" provoked a public discussion on civil rights and liberties – the freedom of speech, expression, and the press – and truth.

Out of Focus - After Gerhard Richter - Kunsthalle - Hamburg

Since the 1960s, the art of Gerhard Richter (*1932) has been marked by an out-of-focus appearance. Just as Georg Baselitz has become famous for turning his pictures’ motifs upside down, the blurred and hazy, out-of-focus appearance is seen as typical for Richter’s paintings. This holds true for his representations of figures, landscapes or still-life paintings just as it does for his abstract paintings.

Seth Price - Friedrich Petzel Gallery - NYC

In Seth Price’s third show with Friedrich Petzel Gallery he screens music videos made to accompany two upcoming vinyl records, one of which debuts this January (Honesty, from AVA Records). The music was recorded by the artist, and includes ghost stories just recently written and narrated by Mr. Price, tracks originally included in videos by the artist from as far back as 2000, and pop songs from many years between. The music videos were originally posted to Youtube this past fall.

System Analysis - group exhibition - Langen Foundation - Neuss

The exhibition, System Analysis, provides insight into the works of a group of younger artists from New York. Liz Deschenes, Wade Guyton, Eileen Quinlan, Blake Rayne, Reena Spaulings and Cheyney Thompson do not conceive themselves as constituting a group, but they are friends and share an interest in questions concerning the making and the conditions of images today. Thus it is characteristic of their works that they employ, to a high degree, techniques of reproduction, and apart from photography and silk-screen printing, use also computers, scanners, printers and photocopiers to fathom the potentials of contemporary art production.
