The NULL/VOID presents: 'STOCKHOLM SYNDROME'/'THE CARGO CULT' - Bussey Building - London

Private View: 16 March 2011, 18:00 - 21:00

EXTENDED THROUGH SATURDAY, 19th of MARCH!

The Null/Void invite you to a double feature show entitled 'Stockholm Syndrome'/ 'The Cargo Cult'. In the field of tension between the two locations an overlap of concepts creates a powerful convergence of metaphors for artistic strategies in contemporary art. A Cargo Cult is a religious practice that has appeared in many traditional pre-industrial tribal societies in the wake of interaction with technologically advanced cultures. The cults focus on obtaining the material wealth (the "cargo") of the advanced culture through magic and religious rituals and practices. This resonates with the expectation that art objects should bring about an experience which is often described as magical, mystical or sublime. The parallels in the fetishization of objects offers a way into looking at works of art through the lense of the phenomenon of 'Cargo Cult'.
