Haim Steinbach - creature - Tanya Bonakdar Gallery - NYC

through October 22, 2011

Tanya Bonakdar Gallery is pleased to present its first solo exhibition of work by acclaimed artist Haim Steinbach. Haim Steinbach raises everyday objects to the level of art. He explores the common social ritual of collecting, arranging and presenting objects, in turn discovering the psychological and cultural context of the object. Steinbach's work has radically redefined the status of the object in art, and has had a far-reaching influence on the growth of post-modern artistic dialogue. This exhibition continues Steinbach's interest in the choices involved in and implicit in display, and the meanings and associations of our individualized, mass-produced and collective culture.

Insurgencies - group show - Angus-Hughes Gallery - London

last chance: through October 2nd 2011

Each artist in the show demonstrates a willingness to demote or jeopardise artistic authority in favour of an acknowledgement of paintings’ shortcomings - as a paradoxical means to its re-invigoration. The subject of these works often manifests as a cross-examination of real-life circumstance, demonstrating an instinctive need to question the validity of the criteria by which it is judged. The exhibition itself performs an active function that seeks ‘…to recreate the emptiness where the pure event of form can take place.’ (Baudrillard)

The installation features assemblage, folk art, vernacular graphics, images of the Watts Towers and art from the LACMA collection selected by Ybarra, Diaz, and the Slanguage Studio, as well as a newly commissioned sculpture by Ybarra that connects the public art works done at the Watts residency site with the LACMA campus.

Lloyd Corporation - Connect. Conjugate. Continue. - Carlos/Ishikawa - London

through October 29th 2011

They are initially held stationary in a Perspex reservoir at the top of the machine. They are disengaged and indifferent, an object constructed as a body for a number, the abstract figure. Specifically weighted and bounce tested, it is a carrier whose shape and material is determined by the most compulsory logistical requirements – a sphere in order to roll, plastic to endure repeated collisions and remain intact. It is an object commensurate with its task as a vessel, although it doesn’t entirely escape aesthetic consideration. Luridly coloured in the strange palette of highlighter pens, they are named according to Old World fantasy, of quests and precious stones. A laboured attempt to characterize the bodies, dress them for the spectacle they will become constitutive of. Yet this is only ever intended as a costume to fit the proceeding theatrics, not an identity that pierces to the heart of the objects. That could lead to a charge of potential discrimination, and this is the business of bare algorithms we are engaged in. For any anxiety just refer to the numerical figure, printed 16 times across each body’s face.

If we dig precious things from the land, we will invite disaster.

Near the day of purification, there will be cobwebs spun back and forth in the sky.

A container of ashes might one day be thrown from the sky, which could burn the land and boil the oceans.

James Richards - Chisenhale Gallery - London

through November 20th 2011

The work is being produced for a dual-screen format, which has been inspired by the weightless flat screens now commonly used for advertising in metropolitan high streets. Juxtaposing his personal and highly expressive methodology for composing moving image within a framework more familiar to technological advertising space, Richards seeks to understand our quotidian experiences of digital advertising as engaging an emotional and complex set of relations between audience and images. Richards will deploy both museological and interior design principles to produce an ambient display structure tailored to the gallery space.

Michael Craig-Martin, Gerard Hemsworth, John Hilliard, John Stezaker -Picture This - Laurent Delaye - London

through October 8th 2011

Craig-Martin, Hemsworth, Hilliard and Stezaker acknowledged that unsolicited images pop out in our daily environment and find their way into the subliminal. Their position was however very distinct from Pop Art, most notably in their opposition to the emphasis on consumerism. They took a radical view on demystifying as opposed to celebrating the image, even when prompted by the vitriolic wit of Warhol. Dematerialisation is not necessarily a matter of material substance. Found, captured, appropriated, or even obliterated, a picture can be any allusive crop applied on the real in its relation with an Idea.

Paul McDevitt - Running on Woollen Legs - Stephen Friedman Gallery

through October 1st 2011

Working in a large-scale format for the first time, in these new paintings McDevitt combines recognisable tropes from across 20th century figurative and abstract art. Here, references to Piet Mondrian and the De Stijl movement sit alongside the recurring motif of a comic white-gloved hand, a playful interlude that recalls both the slight of hand of the traditional magician and the early 1940s Disney character Goofy. The absurd is skilfully captured here, with McDevitt depicting in intricate detail the minutiae of his subjects. On the built up canvases painterly brushstrokes lay under graphic, screen-printed imagery with expressive gesture meeting considered mark making.

Michelle Lopez - Vertical Neck - Simon Preston Gallery - NYC

through October 30th 2011

Simon Preston is pleased to present Vertical Neck, the second solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist Michelle Lopez at the gallery. The exhibition is composed of three series of large-scale, leaning and wall-based sculptures, all of which continue the artist's investigation of sculptural history, gravity and the body. The title of the show classifies a bird, military badge and, quite literally, a pose, but at its root alludes to a cultural and even human redundancy. In this instance, Lopez looks to the legacy of Minimalism. Through a sculptural inquiry, she examines the finish fetish and fascist quality of the monolith. Vertical Neck states the obvious about a well-established form in order to unravel how there's no such truth. Instead the work looks to the bend, where we realize that things are not as they seem.

Keren Cytter - Video Art Manual - Zach Feuer Gallery - NYC

through October 15th 2011

In her films, Cytter explores stories of love, violence, sex, jealousy, betrayal and murder told in non-linear narrative in which time overlaps and characters mutate. The actors repeat lines, switch roles and recite directions aloud creating a shared lexicon through repetition and rhyme. Cytter’s fractured stories, suggestive of dream and memory, are often inspired by direct experience and observation but are filled with literary references, cinematic quotes and clichés drawn from popular culture that result in works that are existential dramas composed from seemingly incompatible genres.

Video In Britain Today - groupshow - Bermondsey Project Space - London

September 10th 2011 - 25th 2011

This show gives exhibition goers interested in the very latest contemporary developments in this popular art form a chance to catch up. There is work by some of the leading young video artists now living in Britain. Not all of the artists are British. Sidesel Christensen is Norwegian; Inez de Coo comes from the Netherlands, though she was born in Malaysia. This reflects the increasingly cosmopolitan nature of the British art community. The configuration of our gallery allows us to show videos in much closer to ideal conditions than usual. Featuring stunning new work from: EMMA CRITCHLEY, INEZ DE COO, SIDSEL CHRISTENSEN, ALEXIS MILNE, ALEX GENE MORRISON, OLEG TOLSTOY

Aeron Bergman and Alejandra Salinas - Gladly Will I Sell For Profit, Dear Merchants of the Town, My Hat Laden With Snow - DUMBO Arts Center - NYC

September 8 -November 6, 2011

Artifacts produced in stone will last for a while, but time will eventually dissolve them into dust just the same as printed matter. The craze to digitize books, photos and other paper artifacts seems to be part of the urge for preservation: but since the average server lasts 5 years before it needs an upgrade or a replacement, the original paper, if stored correctly, will last much longer than the digital copy. Digital files must be continually replaced using new equipment. This continual renovation assumes the will and ability to cough up a budget, but economics is fickle: see Detroit.

9 September 2011 - 8 January 2012

By singling out Cyprien Gaillard, Kitty Kraus, Klara Lidén and Andro Wekua, the prize honours four young artists who have entered the public discourse with self-assured artistic works. What they share is a great openness, a nearly anarchic delight in experimentation that simultaneously operates on a sensual level.

Beni Bischof - Galerie Nicola von Senger - Zurich

through October 15th 2011

The artist displays the absurdity and uncontrollability of daily life. Trivial and apparently insignificant subjects are accentuated by him and placed into an altogether different perspective. He shows a society degenerated to grotesqueness but confronts it with wit and fantasy. Though the alienation of existing images plays a decisive role, he manipulates them radically and therefore they gain an absurd and ironic aspect.

Stephen Willats has always been ahead of his time in terms of his thinking around art, science, sociology, cybernetics and systems analysis. By applying avant-garde concepts from these disciplines to his art making process he has been able to foresee a number of important breakthroughs in each of these fields and has been the instigator of many ideas that have gone on to shape our contemporary world. Willats has been able to consolidate these ideas through conceptual art which becomes both the model and the signifier for his investigations into the fabric of our society.
